The missions or goals of the Social Justice Advocacy Ministry of Saint James Presbyterian Church are to educate, encourage and empower members of our church and community in becoming more actively involved in policy-making decisions affecting the quality of their lives.
Saint James Presbyterian Church was established in 1867, by former slaves who wanted their own house of worship, and have the opportunity to listen to and serve the Holy Spirit and this community.
1872
Vision for the future
Reverend James Crestfield was the first full-time pastor in 1872 and was the first of a series of spiritual leaders with vision to lead this church. He led his congregation in forming the Percy Street School which served Negro men, women, and children as a single room school serving students of varying ages. This perhaps was the first public school for Negroes in the state of North Carolina.
2017
Over 200 years of service
Education has continued as a focus for Saint James members as we celebrated in 2017, educators in this church and their combined tenures of service of over 200 years locally and across the country. Pictures of the visionary pastors of this church hang outside of the J.T. Douglass Fellowship Hall which honors the community and the student led civil rights activism of Reverend J. T. Douglass in Greensboro in the 1960s.
2019
Beyond the walls of this church
Fast forwarding to 2019, social justice and moving beyond the walls of this church as a Matthew 25 congregation led to the formation of the Social Justice Advocacy Ministry which initiated the Black & Brown Women’s Voting Initiative in 2020 and the Adopt a Precinct project in 2024 with the Beloved Community Center, focusing on voter education, voter registration, and encouraging voter participation as voting is your means of sharing your voice in policy- making at the local, state, and national levels.
Reverend Doctor Phanta Lansden has shared from the pulpit, themes related to “Manifest”, “Dream”, and “ God’s Got Your Back” as sermons inspiring members of this congregation in forming and leading community organizations addressing affordable housing through the Greensboro Interfaith Housing Initiative and food insecurity with the formation of the Triad Faith Leaders & Farmers Network.
